Cover Reveal + Interview – Acktorek by Morgan Elizabeth Huneke

Today I am helping Morgan Elizabeth Huneke reveal the cover of her latest book, Acktorek Book 1: The Void! I am thrilled to be taking part in my first cover reveal and let me tell you, it’s gorgeous!

But first, Morgan has so kindly agreed to answer a few questions:

Jen: What inspired you to write Acktorek?

Morgan: A dialogue prompt, actually. I’d been struggling with some pretty major writer’s block, so I kept picking prompts off of Pinterest and writing something short off of them. This one in particular said this:

“Right now, I don’t know whether I want to kiss you or shove you off a bridge.”
“Can I pick?”

Well, the prompt never made it into the short, but I liked what I’d written and thought it seemed like the climax to a novel. So I turned it into one…one that is completely different from the way I originally thought it would be. But I’m happy with the way it turned out.

Jen: That’s so cool! I’ve seen that prompt before and thought it was funny, Pinterest is the best for inspiration. I’m glad it helped get you out of writer’s block and create such an awesome sounding book. ^_^

What was your favorite part of the process?

Morgan: Any time when it all feels like it’s coming together. 😉 My favorite thing about writing in general is when I discover new things about the characters and the story. I really don’t like revising and editing very much, even though it’s 110% necessary, but the discovery is amazing. For this book in particular, though, I think the best part was when I finally cracked Emma’s POV. Carla was easy because even though she’s blind, she’s a musician and she loves stories, so I can relate to her that way. Once I figured out Mitchell’s backstory, he was pretty easy too. Emma, on the other hand, was practically impossible. I just couldn’t get inside her head. Then last December, I reread The Hunger Games trilogy and a good bit of THG fanfiction (she has several unintentional similarities to Katniss) and did some research on people who grew up with mentally ill parents, and it was like she finally let me in. I tried writing the book in 1st person instead of 3rd, and it all finally came together. I know Emma now, and it makes a huge difference in the way the book is written.

Jen: Discovering the characters and story is amazing! I completely understand that revising and editing are not as fun compared to the thrill of discovery. Emma sounds like quite the complicated character. She has similarities to Katniss! I like her already. 😉 It’s always nice when the characters finally let you get to know them.

Do you have a favorite character?

Morgan: I can’t choose! They’re all special to me for different reasons. Well, except for the antagonists. Carla is special to me because she’s a musician and a book lover and I gave her a few traits based on my own younger sister. Mitchell is special because he’s a good and compassionate guy with a really cool job. Grace is special because she shares so many of my fandoms and you can always count on her to reference something just the way I do. I like Brian because he’s steady and dependable, and he’s—as one of my beta readers called him—Brian [Belden] lite. And Emma’s special because she’s gone through so much trauma in her life and she really needs a hug (I’d say more about her, but spoilers). I probably feel closest to Emma at this point, though, because I’ve put so much into trying to understand her.

Jen: Yeah, I knew that question was evil when I asked it. XD All those characters sound amazing! That’s so neat Carla has some of your sister’s traits. I’m looking forward to Grace’s references. 🙂 The guys sound great! Poor Emma, *sends hugs*. I can understand her being the one you feel closest to after trying so hard to get her to open up.

Now that the interview is done, we can see the cover! Oh, wait, let’s not forget the synopsis!

Which would you choose—save your sister or save the world?

Emma Edsel’s first priority has always been protecting her blind sister Carla. So when Carla begins to develop science-defying abilities that threaten her life, Emma will stop at nothing to save her. With nowhere else to turn, she seeks help from Mitchell, the new boy at school who seems to know much more about it than he will admit.

After his last mission went horribly awry, Mitchell Banks is relieved to have a simple task: seal a small, accidental portal between Earth and other worlds in the multiverse. He didn’t count on his growing feelings for Emma—and the dangerous levels of dimension energy contaminating Carla.

Carla knows the voice in her head is evil. Manipulative. Feeding her with a strange energy she can control. She doesn’t know that she is the key to a coming global catastrophe and Mitchell’s boss will use any means possible to prevent it…including blackmailing him into murdering her.

Wow! This book sounds epic!

  1. Such a fun interview, girls! I always love hearing how stories come about. It’s wild how an entire story can come from one prompt or literally ANYTHING. It’s the best! 😀 And oh my goodness gracious, this book sounds EPIC! :O Plus the characters sound like one fantastic crew! So fun! Thank you both so much for sharing.
